It focuses on a family headed by Jim (played by Jim Belushi) that must deal with one another and life around them in general. Courtney Thorne-Smith plays the part of Cheryl, Jim’s wife and mother of three children, Kyle, Gracie and Ruby. Life would be perfect for the family were it not for Jim’s own proclivity for laziness and complete inability to stay out of trouble - but were he responsible and good, the show wouldn’t be funny. So.

According to Jim has found a dedicated audience that has kept it on the air despite warning signs that the show would be canceled, not to mention an official statement in 2007 that it wouldn’t be back for a seventh season. That apparently didn’t stick, though, and Jim’s back for another round - we’ll see how much longer he can go.

Lucas is the tale of Lucas (Haim), a shy and very intelligent teen who always finds himself victimized by the other kids. He has a protector of sorts in friend Cappie (Sheen), a football player who’d originally been a tormentor until Lucas helped keep him in school when he was sick. And over summer Lucas meets and befriends older girl Maggie (Green) who has just moved into the neighbourhood.

Lucas begins to feel for Maggie, but she doesn’t return the sentiment; instead she turns to Cappie, who loses his girlfriend because he likes Maggie. This enrages Lucas, who feels absolutely humiliated when he shows up to escort Maggie to a school dance - only to find Cappie has taken his place. He finds some small consolation in his other female friend Rina (Ryder), but not enough. He decides he wants to impress Maggie, and does so by joining the football team.

This is a fatal mistake, however, and Lucas finds himself beaten fairly to a pulp in the first game. He’s sent to the hospital. Rina, trying to help Lucas’ two friends understand how bad his life is, takes them to his home - a trailer, broken-down, complete with an oft-drunk father.

Lucas comes back to school some days later, thinking it will be the same bully-filled day as every other - however, upon opening his locker, he finds a varsity letter jacket with his name and football number on the back.

Then the whole hallway begins to clap, and Lucas raises his arms in triumph.

Where does Smith fit into it, you ask? She’s another student called Alise. And not one terribly important to the story.

Summer School tells the tale of gym teacher Freddy Shoop (Harmon) who couldn’t like his job less and who, on the final day of the school year, is ready to head off with his girlfriend on vacation. But his plans go awry when a group of summer school students (including Pam, played by Smith) lose their remedial English teacher to a successful lottery draw. Shoop is scammed into becoming the teacher.

Teaching proves difficult, however, and for the first little while Shoop simply lets the kids have fun. But once the principal finds out he issues Shoop an ultimatum: either the kids all pass or he’s out of a job. Shoop buckles down and, in exchange for their studying, he offers each student a different prize (taking one of Lamaze classes, allowing another to throw a party in his house, and letting Pam move in with him). And it seems to work.

However a few of the students still don’t pass the final exam, and he’s on the edge of being canned when the parents come to the rescue, insisting that their kids have improved greatly, whether they passed or not. And the principal has no choice but to accept that verdict.

Well, of one book, anyway. Her first book is called Outside In. It’s the story of a soap star who’s done extremely well in life: she has fame, fortune, and a man she can rely on. But when the man leaves her for one of her fellow castmates, she’s forced to rethink her life in drastic ways - not to mention take a good, long look at the industry she’s involved in.

From the sounds of it Outside In is based largely on Smith’s own experiences in the industry, as the novel’s protagonist has to deal with maintaining a steady, near-anorexic weight while battling off self-esteem issues. And if there’s anybody who can write about an experience and pull it off in fiction it’s somebody who’s been forced to live that experience.

What’s that? A family? Yes, Smith is part of a family of three at the moment, sharing the spotlight with husband Roger Fishman and infant son Jacob Emerson. Fishman was not her first choice for husband, however: she had an abortive relationship with one Andrew Conrad that ended in 2001, after only one year of marriage.

Married in a secret ceremony in 2007, the happy couple seems to be doing well for themselves so far. Here’s hoping this marriage will do better than the last (the fact that Smith seems to be taking a break from her busy schedule will probably help, at least).

She actually had to quit Ally McBeal after eight seasons because there was too much pressure for her to keep insanely thin. It sounds, more, like she wasn’t alone in that, as many of the stars on Ally McBeal (Portia de Rossi and McBeal herself, Calista Flockhart) experienced similar problems in remaining thin enough to appease the producers.

Smith has since battled off her anorexia, and retains a relatively healthy and active lifestyle to this day. Given the insane pressures of Hollywood, however, how long can she last before somebody asks her to stop eating again?

Paired with father Roger Fishman, the owner of a media company, Smith was publicly pregnant with her baby (which she had to work to hide during her time on the sitcom According to Jim) until January of 2008, whereupon she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

The boy, dubbed Jacob Emerson (a normal enough name for a celebrity baby, but where did they get Emerson from?) is doing well and hasn’t made many public appearances, possibly because he’s still so young.

Look to Courtney Thorne Smith hair for proof. She hasn’t been that huge of a star in the last eight years or so. Granted, she starred on According to Jim for the show’s duration, but that show wasn’t a blockbuster hit of Ally McBeal’s caliber.
